Tis the Season

The festive season is here and for the most part it is a time for joy, giving and cheer. However sometimes it can be a cause of stress as everything becomes busier and more expensive during the ‘silly season'. 

Christmas means different things to different people, though it is generally about giving, spending time with your loved ones and celebration. It can also become a time of over indulgence and over spending (not just your money but also your time and your energy). We tend to put so much pressure on ourselves to make Christmas perfect, we jam pack our schedule with events, shopping and parties, yet it seems that it is actually the simple things that make Christmas merry and bright and fill us with joy and gratitude. 

We sat around the table at our last company meeting and asked the question, how is it that we can support our clients to get through the holiday season without feeling overwhelmed?” 

So how is that we can make the most of the festive season, without it getting the most of us?

A time for Gratitude 
During Christmas you will usually have some time off from your work, you could use this time off to reflect on all of your blessings for 2017. Write them down. Look at all of the good you have in your life and be grateful for how far you have come since last Christmas. 

It doesn’t have to perfect 
Allow Christmas to be what it is without the expectation or need for it to be perfect. Enjoy going with the flow a little. A part of letting go of the need for everything to be perfect is simplifying your holiday season. Simplify your calendar, don’t over commit your time and remember to actually stop and embrace the spirit of Christmas. 

Create new and embrace old traditions 
Traditions during the holidays make us feel warm and connected to one another and to something larger than ourselves. This provides a sense of certainty and comfort. Whether it is visiting the Christmas lights in your local area on Christmas eve, watching a Christmas movie together, or going to the carols- embrace old traditions or create something new and exciting for your family to enjoy together. 

Give experiences rather than gifts 
During our meeting where we discussed how we could support our clients to get through the holiday season without too much stress, this idea was a very common theme. A lot of our team had decided that they would be giving their loved ones experiences rather than gifts this Christmas! After all it is the moments that we end up cherishing the most. Perhaps one of your children has always wanted to go to a football game or a music concert, it doesn’t have to be an expensive experience, just one that will be memorable. 

Practice mindful giving 
It is easy to get caught up in the bright Christmas advertising and want to buy everyone the newest and greatest of everything. A gift purchased with thought, that is truly intended for the recipient is always more special. 

Make homemade gifts 
If you have kids this is a fantastic way to also enjoy quality time with them over the holidays. Perhaps you could make some home made chutneys for the grandparents and put them in vintage jars with pretty ribbons, or you could bake some gourmet Christmas themed cookies for their teachers. This creates fun experiences for the kids and also helps minimise your holiday spending.

Send a letter to yourself to open next Christmas 
Talk about all that you have achieved in the year that has been and your hopes and dreams for the year to come! This will be an awesome gift for you to open next Christmas and see how far you have come and how much you have grown.

Reignite your Passion and Purpose 
As things begin to slow down in the days before Christmas, take some time to ‘review and renew’ your life to discover what is truly important to you. Use this time to define and uncover your passion and purpose to start 2018 with a renewed focus and intention. The holidays are also a great time to really get clear on your goals for the New Year and the powerful collective energy of Christmas makes it a wonderful time for manifestation.

Write a love letter 
One of the most meaningful gifts you can give is a hand-written letter filled with love and gratitude to your husband or wife, beloved one, your parents, your children, or a special friend. By taking time and thoughtful care in expressing your feelings you will be giving a gift that will never be forgotten. Get creative with how you present the gift; you could do it on beautiful parchment in the form of a scroll, a sealed letter or perhaps a message in a bottle?
