Art of Happiness

The Art of Happiness

We know him as the always smiling, always laughing Dalai Lama. In his book the Art of Happiness, the message is simple; our life’s purpose is to be happy. Although the notion is simple, the Art of Happiness itself can seem like our greatest challenge. One common mistake humans make is to look to external sources for gratification or happiness, when the truth is “human happiness and human satisfaction must ultimately come from within oneself.” Once we are living from a place where we are taking absolute responsibility for our own happiness, we are in a great position of self-power.

Here are 5 daily rituals to practice to help you perfect the Art of Happiness.

1. Practice Gratitude
Count your blessings or thank your lucky stars every single day. When you wake up in the morning take a few moments to think of all of things you are grateful for, think of the people you love and the people that love you. This simple practice is probably one of the most important in perfecting the Art of Happiness. A heart that is full of gratitude has no room for want. What are your blessings?

2. Embrace a growth mindset
Once you have a level of self-awareness and get that, “If you always do what you've always done, you will always get what you've always got,” you create the space to shift your mindset. If we come from a limited, fearful fixed minded position, there is no space for happiness.

Once you become aware of your limiting thoughts or beliefs and recognise any fixed minded traits that have kept you small or sabotaged your success there is an opportunity for breakthrough! With the recognition of fixed mindedness or where you have believed you are right that you are so wrong or no good, comes the opportunity to let go of that mindset once and for all.

  • To change our lives we must change our thoughts.
  • By changing our thoughts, we change our reality
  • When we bring our thoughts, words and actions into alignment, the magic really happens!

3. Create Balance
Check in with your body and mind each day and take note of how you feel. Have you pushed it maybe a little too hard this week? Are you in need of some ‘me’ time? If you genuinely feel this way then that is OK- it is so important to honour yourself. Take the time out and indulge yourself in an activity that you really enjoy. You need to balance the hard work with time off to really appreciate life’s journey. Balance is what keeps you sane and sanity will help keep you on track to perfecting the Art of Happiness. If you feel the need to go and enjoy the sun, meditate, be in nature- then get out there and do it! It will revitalise your body and mind so you can get back to kicking those goals!

4. Practice Forgiveness
Practicing forgiveness does not mean that you are condoning someone’s behaviour it simply means that you are no longer willing to carry the burden of their actions/behaviour in your heart. “Holding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” When you are holding on to unnecessary anger towards another person, it isn’t really punishing them, it is preventing you from being truly happy.

5. Be present
You can’t change your past and you have no control of your future. Live in the moment and be present to the many blessings in each and every moment. Be present when you’re with your friends, family and colleagues and be present when you’re on your own. You’ll be amazed by the beauty and power of now.
